    Let's be friends!

It’s the Nordic blood in me. ❄️ Ironically, It’s the Nordic blood in me. ❄️

Ironically, we did happen to “escape the cold” during this winter Rocky Mountain National Park trip. It was -45 at home and literally 70 degrees warmer in the Colorado mountains hahaha.
Here’s our EXACT 3-day itinerary for Kyoto, Japa Here’s our EXACT 3-day itinerary for Kyoto, Japan, including our bullet train travel day. 🇯🇵 And, honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Tips…

Go to Fushimi Inari Shrine and Arashiyama Bamboo Forest as soon as it starts to get light out in the morning (I’m talking like 5:30 a.m.) if you want any shot at taking photos without crowds!

Also… The monkey park was my favorite. 🙊
Lack of oxygen was worth it. Location: Trail Ridg Lack of oxygen was worth it.

Location: Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park

Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the USA, peaking at over 12,180 feet of elevation. 🤯 As you could imagine, the road closes to vehicle traffic during the winter because of snow. BUT, you can still hike, snowshoe or cross-country ski on it in the winter!

We rented skis at Estes Park Mountain Shop, parked at the Many Parks Curve Overlook parking lot and skied away. ⛷️

Would you ski here?

This whole weekend we joked that we were “escaping the cold” on this winter Rocky Mountain National Park trip because it was around 25 degrees Fahrenheit there and -45 degrees in Wisconsin.

All of the Denver locals were like, “You picked a cold week to be here.” And we were like, “No no… We picked the perfect weekend to be here.” 🤣

Tropical vacation for a Wisconsinite.

By: Indigo Sahara, M.A. | Published: July 26, 2023 | Updated: January 2, 2024

Want to know the best time to visit Giant’s Causeway for iconic views, great weather and fewer crowds? Here’s the ultimate guide to visiting Giant’s Causeway at sunrise in the summer.

Best Time To Visit Giant's Causeway For Views And Fewer Crowds

To date, Giant’s Causeway is my favorite place on Earth. My fascination for this place began when I read about it in a library book in elementary school, and it has grown ever since.

I’ve since visited Giant’s Causeway at least 5 times, so you can trust me when I tell you that I have absolutely perfected the best time to visit the causeway.

Best Time To Visit Giant’s Causeway

The best time to visit Giant’s Causeway is at sunrise in the summer. At this time, Giant’s Causeway will have zero crowds, colorful sunrise views and the best Irish weather possible.

As with the majority of tourist attractions, going to Giant’s Causeway at sunrise practically ensures that you’ll have the coastline completely to yourself.

Plus, weather permitting, you’ll see an incredible blue, gold and pink sunrise peek over the mountains.

Furthermore, the best season to visit Giant’s Causeway is summer because, in summer, there is the highest probability for sunshine. Irish weather is notoriously rainy and unpredictable; however, in the summer, there is a lot more sun.

The only problem with visiting Giant’s Causeway in summer is that summer is Ireland’s peak tourism season, so there will be tons of crowds. Unless, you visit at sunrise.

We visited Giant’s Causeway at sunrise in the summer (peak season) and had the entire causeway to ourselves for over an hour.

Visiting Giant’s Causeway At Sunrise

When it comes to visiting Giant’s Causeway at sunrise, there are a few things to know; namely, the causeway opening hours, how to get to the Giant’s Causeway at sunrise, as well as where to park to see the Giant’s Causeway at sunrise.

First, what time does Giant’s Causeway open?

What time does Giant’s Causeway open?

Dawn.

Everyday, the Giant’s Causeway opens to the public at dawn. However, the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre and parking lot open at 9:00 a.m. This means, the shuttle busses down to the Giant’s Causeway also begin running at 9:00 a.m.

Although that the visitor’s center does not open until 9:00 a.m., you are still free to visit the Giant’s Causeway at dawn because the coastline is public land. You just won’t be able to take the shuttle bus from the Visitor’s Centre.

Instead, you will have to park elsewhere and walk down to the coastline from the staircase next to The Causeway Hotel.

When we visited Giant’s Causeway in summer at sunrise, we parked in the back of The Causeway Hotel parking lot without any problems.

Even though we weren’t guests at the Causeway Hotel, we did not see any signs enforcing guest-only parking. Typically, throughout the day, The Causeway Hotel parking is lot is paid, but at sunrise (we arrived just before 5:00 a.m.), there were no signs, parking meters or parking lot attendants in sight.

Otherwise, we would have looked for nearby street parking. You cannot park in the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre parking lot before 9:00 a.m.

Alternatively, to get the most amount of sleep possible and still see the Giant’s Causeway at sunrise, book your stay at The Causeway Hotel. This way, you won’t have to wake up earlier to account for drive time. All you’ll have to do is take the staircase from The Causeway Hotel parking lot down to the causeway.

Similarly, because the coastline is public land, entrance to the Giant’s Causeway is free. The only fee you should ever have to pay to see the Giant’s Causeway is the shuttle bus fee after 9:00 a.m.

Therefore, when going to the Giant’s Causeway at sunrise, visitation is free.

How long does it take to walk the Giant’s Causeway?

From the visitor center, it takes 15 minutes to walk down to the main part of the Giant’s Causeway. It also takes 15 minutes to walk to the Giant’s Causeway from The Causeway Hotel.

Once at the main part of the Giant’s Causeway, you can expect it to take at least 10 minutes to walk on the Giant’s Causeway, 5 minutes to walk to the Giant’s Shoe and 10 minutes to walk up to the Giant’s Organ Pipes.

There are also longer hiking routes available to explore if you wish.

How much time do you need at Giant’s Causeway?

You need around 3 hours at Giant’s Causeway if it is your first time visiting.

This timeline accounts for getting to and from the visitor center (whether by foot or shuttle bus), exploration of the causeway, and visiting the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre.

If you want to hike to the Giant’s Organ Pipes (top of the causeway) and beyond, plan to spend closer to 3-4 hours at Giant’s Causeway in total.

What time does Giant’s Causeway close?

Dusk.

Even though the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre usually closes at 6:00 p.m. (18:00), the coastline does not close until dusk because it is public land.

Again, you are more than welcome to visit the Giant’s Causeway for free after the visitor center closes. You just won’t be able to park in the visitor center parking lot or take the shuttle bus.

This means, although sunset is more popular than sunrise, there are still fewer crowds at the Giant’s Causeway after the visitor center closes. If you aren’t keen on waking up for sunrise, walking to Giant’s Causeway at sunset will be your next best bet.
