Where To Experience Glamping In South Dakota

By: Indigo Sahara, M.A. | Published: May 12, 2021 | Updated: March 7, 2024

Glamping (AKA “glam camping” or luxury camping) is quickly becoming a must-do travel trend. Thanks to Custer Hospitality and Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort in Custer, South Dakota, I had the opportunity to check glamping off my bucket list at the feet of the Black Hills, native American culture and Mount Rushmore.

Have you ever make a travel bucket list? If you don’t know where to start, I have free downloadable Budget Travel Bucket List to spark your interest! Click here for the free download.

If you’re looking to glamp (or even just seek a nicer campground) in South Dakota, here is a brief review of Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort.

Where To Experience Glamping In South Dakota: Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort Review

First, let me preface this by saying that I am not camper. I hate bugs. Humidity is my hair’s worst enemy. And I can’t stand waking up in the middle of the night because my limbs are frozen.

But, I do love camp atmosphere. I love the feeling of waking up with fresh air in your lungs, birds chirping, leaves rustling in the wind and the bonfire scent lingering from the evening before.

Where To Experience Glamping In South Dakota

At Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort in Custer, South Dakota, you get the best of both worlds. You get the convenience of clean bathrooms (some of the glamping tents even have their own bathrooms), culture of a more primitive life, as well as the luxury of your own private tent with tall ceilings, comfortable bedding, a heater and even a fridge/freezer. Plus, you get that summer camp culture.

1. Comfort (Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort Review)

  • Very clean.
  • Very hospitable.
  • Few bugs.
  • Cool bedding.
  • Room temperature control in the luxury canvas tents.

The luxury glamping canvas tent honestly defines coziness. Like I alluded to before, you have complete control over the temperature of the tent. Likewise, the bedding is cool, and the room is clean. I camped here for three days and only saw three bugs on the entire camp property.

2. Culture

  • Teepee rentals.
  • Free car pass to Crazy Horse Memorial and the Indian Museum of North America when you stay in a glamping canvas tent.

Moreover, in appreciation for the indigenous culture of South Dakota, Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort offers unique teepee stays. Each teepee is named after a native saying or phrase. Furthermore, because we stayed in one of the glamping canvas tents, they also gave a free pass to visit Crazy Horse Memorial and the Indian Museum of North America at check-in.

3. Location (Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort Review)

  • Mount Rushmore: 30 minutes away.
  • Crazy Horse Memorial: 10 minutes away.
  • Custer State Park: 15 minutes away.

Luckily, at ten minutes away from Crazy Horse Memorial, fifteen minutes away from Custer State Park and thirty short minutes away from Mt. Rushmore, Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort is in the perfect location for your Black Hills vacation.

4. Amenities

  • Clean, private, single-stall communal bathrooms.
  • Family pool, adult pool and hot tub.
  • Free WIFI.
  • Playground.
  • Picnic tables.
  • Paved campsites.
  • General store with snacks, meals and souvenirs.
  • Laundry.
  • Pet-friendly.
  • Adventure rentals.

I am honestly shocked at the amenities this resort has to offer. Aside from the glamping accommodations, there are nice campsites, bathrooms close to every campsite, two pools, a hot tub, a playground and a general camp store.
