Is Level8 luggage worth it?

Yes, Level8 is a high-quality, durable luggage brand that proves worthy of the price.

Level8 luggage is worth it if you are looking for a simple, minimalist lightweight hardshell suitcase, the sturdiest and most efficient spinner wheels possible, and/or a sleek and stylish set of new luggage. You don’t need all the bells and whistles. You just want a reliable suitcase that looks professional too.

Level8 luggage is not worth it if you are looking for multiple pockets, built-in compartments and/or other creative features. In other words, you want the bells and whistles.

Although the Luminous Texture 2 piece set that I tested lacked additional features that I’ve seen in some suitcases, such as multiple built-in pockets or built-in wet bags, this set will still be a new staple suitcase set in our household for the following reasons.

Below, you will see why the pros outweigh the cons. And, you’ll be able to get a better sense of whether Level8 luggage is suitable for you.

I have tested the Level8 Luminous Texture 2 piece set on various trips now, including both a quick weekend road trip and an international trip to the Maldives that took over 35 hours of travel time both ways. Needless to say, I’ve had plenty of time to find the honest facts about this Level8 luggage.

Now, let’s dive into a deeper Level8 luggage review, featuring the durability, exterior, interior, and style and aesthetics.

Durability: 8/10

This set’s material has proven to be one of the most durable materials I’ve had in a suitcase. Even after 100+ hours of travel time, my set still looks basically brand new without using any suitcase protectors of any kind.

And, this is saying a lot because I’m fairly rough with my luggage. I don’t mind a scratch or two, so I care less about bumping into things or strategically placing my bag in the overhead compartment to prevent marks.

The 360-degree spinner wheels are efficient and sturdy. They don’t wobble or wave like some hardcover spinner suitcases. In the words of my husband, “You have to purposely shake the suitcase to make the wheels wobble at all.” Additionally, the wheels push and roll easier on carpet than other luggage brands I have tested.

It is ridiculously inconvenient when you’re in line on the jet bridge, with dozens of other passengers patiently waiting behind you, and your suitcase wheels catch on every piece of carpet or metal joint. We are all familiar with the slight embarrassment of that awkward tripping sensation. But, I have yet to experience that with this Level8 luggage.

On the contrary, the black exterior is relatively flexible for a hard case. It is not as firmly formed as alternative suitcases. This could be a good thing if you tend to stuff your bags to their brim. Or, you could find this feature as a downfall if you prefer the hardest of hardshell luggage.

Similarly, although the sleek, aesthetically-pleasing chalky black color is perfect in terms of looks, which I’ll elaborate on later on in this Level8 luggage review, it does allow for the occasional white scuff marks from normal use. I’ve found that most of the scuff marks can easily be erased with a Magic Eraser or simple washcloth. But, this downside is still worth noting so you have as many details as possible to make an informed buying decision.

Weight: 9/10

On the plus side, these Level8 suitcases are extremely lightweight. In fact, they may be the lightest hardcover suitcases my husband I own. The overall durability of the product despite the light-weighted build is really quite impressive. Level8’s German-made Makrolon material, to which they give credit to their luggage’s lightweight toughness, has proven to fulfill its intended purpose.

This means, you’ll be able to pack more into the luggage without crossing over airline baggage limits. You won’t have to pay overweight fees if you’re cognizant. And, you won’t have to disperse your weight across your bags as thoughtfully as you do with heavy suitcases.

On average, a Level8 carry-on suitcase weighs 8.93 pounds, and a Level8 check-in suitcase weighs 11.99 pounds.

The Level8 suitcase set that I tested, the Luminous Texture 2 piece set, weighs 7.7 pounds, 9.8 pounds and 11.4 pounds for the 20 inch (carry-on), 24 inch (checked) and 28 inch (checked) suitcases respectively.

Exterior: 9/10

Aside from the noteworthy durability and occasional scuff mark, there are a couple additional exterior features worth mentioning.

First, the Level8 suitcases are fully equipped with TSA-compliant locks. This means, you can lock your suitcases, and TSA will still be able to check your suitcase if necessary if chosen at random without damaging your bag. The lock codes are easy to set, and the lock zippers are firm.

Second, the handle retraction is notably smooth. You can swiftly retract and raise the suitcase handle without any fidgeting or catching. It’s always annoying when your luggage handle is too short and you know it can go higher, but for some reason it stubbornly refuses to raise without a fight. I haven’t had this happen with Level8 thus far.

In like, the handles attached to the suitcase body (i.e. the handles that assist with lifting, not the handles that assist with rolling) are mechanically genius. They lay flat against the luggage so that they don’t catch on anything. Instead, they seemingly slide open and up when grabbed.

Lastly, I appreciate that the exterior design includes four short legs on one side of the suitcase so that it easily stands upright when it is placed on its side. Whether you slide it sideways into an overhead compartment or the checked baggage handlers set it sideways on the conveyor belt, these legs will prevent falling and, therefore, prevent marking.

Interior: 7/10

Even though the Level8 exterior has proven to be impressive, the interior is where it seems to lack creativity and durability. Whereas competing luggage brands have amped up their interiors with a plethora of pockets, tear-proof materials, built-in packing cube compartments and more, the Level8 luggage interior is best for the minimalist traveler who appreciates simplicity and basic necessity.

The interiors of the Level8 Luminous Texture 2 piece set consists of just two mesh compartments on either side of the hard cover. Although the mesh material is practical in the sense that you can see all your belongs without digging or unzipping, it feels as though it has tear potential if you try to overpack.

I personally am a notorious over-packer and suitcase stuffer (you know, the type who has to sit on her suitcase to zip it shut). So, strong material in the interior is critical for the longevity of my luggage. On the other hand, if you are a professional packer who always travels with no more than a small capsule wardrobe, than you’ll love the mesh material and its see-through quality.

Moreover, because the interior has fewer creative features as mentioned, you can fit more into the both the checked luggage sizes and carry-on sizes of the suitcases. This is also another reason why Level8 has been able to produce such a featherweight luggage line. Fewer heavy features means less space taken up in the interior and less weight added.

Cost: 7/10

In sum, the prices of Level8 luggage are fair. Ranging between $100-$400 on average, Level8 luggage puts itself in a mid-tier luggage brand category.

At the time of publishing, the original non-sale cost of my two piece set, which includes both a checked bag and a carry-on size bag, costs $369.99.

Level8 is not the most expensive luggage brand on the market. But, it is definitely not the cheapest luggage brand on the market either, by any means. If you’re looking for a the best price luggage possible, I recommend going to a retailer in your area that sells name brand luggage that is out of season at a discounted rate. Just know, these retailers will have very limited luggage brands and luggage qualities.

That being said, I have flown with suitcases that cost over $300 and suitcases that cost me less than $50. While the cheap suitcases certainly aren’t as stylish, and certainly don’t have as many creative features, they get the job done when needed and last a long time if taken care of properly.

However, if you want to invest in a high-quality name-brand suitcase, Level8 offers very fair pricing compared to its competitors. Level8 could easily charge over $200 per bag. Instead, the brand maintains rates that are pretty affordable for the average budget traveler.

Style And Aesthetics: 9.5/10

As shallow as it may be, my favorite quality of the Level8 Luminous Texture suitcases is, without a doubt, the look of the baggage. Call me crazy, but there is a certain added level of confidence, courage and sophistication that you carry when you roll a sleek matching set of luggage into the airport.

As Level8 describes on their website product page, the “remarkable diamond textures catch eyes and turn heads.” They aren’t wrong. The aesthetics of this luggage redefine quiet luxury through the stunning exterior shell and subtle branding.

Can’t you picture yourself, chin up, strutting through the airport terminal en route to your dream destination? I know I can.
