The first time I visited Vegas was for my 21st birthday. I was a textbook city girl who just wanted to stay on the Las Vegas Strip, watch an entertaining show and spend an innocent $30 at the crazy casinos.

Fast forward to my last trip to Vegas and I wanted out of the city ASAP. 😂

The difference? This time, I knew the city had more to offer. Such as…

How to Make the Most of Holidays Away from Family

By: Indigo Sahara, M.A. | Published: November 23, 2020 | Updated: February 4, 2024

Holidays Spend Away from Family Members | Blog Post | Indigo Sahara

To most people, spending the holidays away from family does not exactly sound appealing, but it’s a reality for many of us this year. Although this season won’t be the same as usual, you can save your tears!

Allow us professionals (pilot kids, military kids, service kids, etc.) to enlighten you. Here’s how you can make the most of this holiday season even if you won’t physically be with your loved ones.

How to Make the Most of Holidays Away from Family

Table of Contents

Toggle
  • 1. Celebrate together on a different day.
  • 2. Take advantage of technology during your holidays away from family.
  • 3. Count your blessings. (THIS IS KEY.)
  • 4. Don’t sacrifice your reputation in the process of planning holidays away from family.

1. Celebrate together on a different day.

Have you ever heard of Christmas in July? I mean, hopefully you can celebrate together before next summer, but you get the point. Who wouldn’t want a belated Christmas gift in March anyway?

Accept your current circumstances with humility, and allow room in your heart for late festivity-fun.

2. Take advantage of technology during your holidays away from family.

Plan ahead for a family video-chat meetup and actually commit to it.

Zoom together or video chat on another platform like FaceTime, Skype or Facebook Messenger video. Play a virtual family game, screen share a favorite holiday movie (legally, of course) or at least call to catch up for a few minutes.

Remember to plan ahead, though. It’s easy to say, “yes, let’s FaceTime,” but it’s easier to skip actually pulling through with the plan. Set a specific time to be together virtually before the day-of so that everyone can commit to participating.

3. Count your blessings. (THIS IS KEY.)

I know. It’s cliche. Regardless of the saying’s overuse, always be grateful that you actually have people to miss. And you have people that miss you.

This is a huge blessing. Not many people have family to miss. Give thanks for the people you cherish.

4. Don’t sacrifice your reputation in the process of planning holidays away from family.

Be responsible. Be respectful. Honor authority. Your reputation and the reputation of your core values are at risk!

Make sure your real priorities are in line with your actions and your reactions. Don’t allow this one holiday season away from your family become a barricade to the gospel.
