📍Lake Michigan

If you’ve never been to the Great Lakes, you have no true understanding of just how huge these freshwater lakes are! People are stunned whenever they first visit that they can’t see the other side of the lakes. Not even close.

Between the surf, strong currents, shipwrecks, unique marine life and vastness, the Great Lakes truly feel like oceans.

The different? No salt to sting your eyes and (arguably more importantly) no scary sharks. 🦈

Those are happy tears btw. ✈️ Just booked a b Those are happy tears btw. ✈️

Just booked a business class lay-flat seat from the USA to Japan for $32.69. Yes, really. 🤯

How?

Easy.

First, I opened one new travel credit card with flexible points and responsibly earned the card’s opening bonus.

Then, after I got a @thriftytraveler email alert for Delta One award availability from the USA to Japan, I transferred those flexible points to an airline transfer partner (in this case, Flying Blue to book a Delta One flight through Air France).

Boom. 89,500 points (which is a bargain, by the way) + $32.69 out of pocket later…

I got myself a biz class flight worth $7000 for less than the cost of our Chipotle order. 💸

What To Wear In Bora Bora At Night

By: Indigo Sahara, M.A. | Published: February 5, 2024 | Updated: February 1, 2024

When it comes to what to wear in Bora Bora at night, you’ll want to dress up for dinner. Dresses, nice sandals and jewelry are appropriate for women. Slacks, khaki shorts, button-ups and loafers are appropriate for men. Bora Bora nights are still warm, so you don’t have to worry about being cold at night.

1. Evening Dress

Most people dress up in Bora Bora at night to go to dinner. While you certainly don’t have to dress black tie, you’ll probably be splurging on one or two fancy dinners during your trip. So, you should bring a few evening dresses to wear these nights.

I brought this elegant blue evening dress. I loved that it matched the iconic Bora Bora water, plus it was loose and comfortable to wear on my sunburnt skin. Unfortunately, Amazon no longer sells this exact dress, so here are a couple alternatives: Queqiao halter dress or the Mac Duggal ruffle tiered gown.

I also brought this Lyaner black satin dress. This dress is the perfect travel dress, as it is lightweight, doesn’t take up much suitcase space and doesn’t wrinkle.

2. Casual Beach Dresses

Similarly, casual beach dresses are a perfectly viable option for what to wear in Bora Bora at night as well. As long as the restaurant doesn’t have a dress code, you will still be dressy enough wearing casual beachwear.

3. Dress Sandals Or Shoes

To match your dressy Bora Bora outfit, pack a pair of sandals that double as both your pool sandals and your evening wear. For example, these Old Navy T-Strap flip-flops are waterproof for the pool and beach, but are much dressier looking than traditional flip-flops.

4. Jewelry

In Bora Bora, you should not wear jewelry during the day. You could lose your jewelry in the ocean or, worse, attract sharks. Sharks are attracted to shiny object, mistaking the objects for food. So, it’s best to avoid wearing jewelry in the ocean.

At night, however, your daytime swims will be finished, so you are free to show off all your fine jewelry at night in Bora Bora. All of the resorts are safe, so you don’t have to worry about jewelry theft.

5. Light Jacket

Furthermore, depending on the time of year you visit Bora Bora, it may be worthwhile to pack a light jacket, such as a denim jacket or blazer, to put over your evening wear in case temperatures drop at night.

Although, I was in Bora Bora in November, and I don’t think I used my light jacket once. Check the weather forecast before your trip. There is no harm in bringing a light jacket just in case.

6. Slacks And Button-Ups For Men

As for men, slacks and button-ups are appropriate for what to wear in Bora Bora at night. Men don’t necessarily have to wear suits and ties at night, but they will feel underdressed in a T-shirt and shorts. I recommend slacks or nice khaki shorts for bottoms and a polo or button-up on top.

Also, men, if you want to break out your favorite tropical button-up shirt in Bora Bora, go ahead.

Does it get cold in Bora Bora?

The coldest it gets in Bora Bora is in January, when temperatures average a high of 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) and a low of 57 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees Celsius). These temperatures are cold for a beach destination.

However, from March through November, you can expect hot temperatures in the mid-70s to high-80s in Bora Bora. These temperatures are plenty warm to comfortably swim in the ocean and pools.

Again, I was in Bora Bora toward the end of November was never cold.

Do you need a jacket in Bora Bora?

It’s a smart idea to bring a lightweight jacket for Bora Bora in case you get chilly at night. But, it is unlikely that you’ll actually need a jacket in Bora Bora.

Again, I recommend bringing one lightweight denim jacket or blazer to match your evening resort wear. You really only need one, unless you’re visiting in January.

Do you need bug spray in Bora Bora?

Yes, you do need bug spray in Bora Bora. Bora Bora has mosquitoes and pesky flies.

However, the resorts typically spray for bugs, so if you’re staying at a nice resort, you shouldn’t experience too many mosquitoes at night. I stayed at the InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana (check out my full resort review here), and I don’t recall many mosquito bites.

On the other hand, the flies were constantly after our food, which was annoying. I would have liked bug spray just to keep the flies away.

Next time, I will be bringing the Kinfield Golden Hour insect repellent, a chemical-free, cruelty-free and eco-friendly bug spray that actually works.
