Positano, Italy, has risen to fame because of Instagram in the last decade. From the layered pastel buildings and portrait-worthy eateries to the stunning teal Mediterranean and black sand beach, there is no wondering if Positano and Amalfi Town have photogenic views. Here are 30 Amalfi Coast Instagram spots for iconic photos, with a detailed map and 45 photo examples!
Prepare To Take Stellar Photos
Before we jump into the Amalfi Coast Instagram spots, there are four steps you need to take to make sure you can capture excellent photos.
- Gather your camera gear — even if that’s just your iPhone. (I’ve listed all of the best budget camera gear for travel photography here.)
- Pack your most Instagram-worthy Amalfi Coast outfits. (Here’s a compiled list of 17 outfits for a trip to Positano, Italy, and the Amalfi Coast).
- Learn the basics of taking amazing travel photos (as you can see here).
- Learn a couple of poses for your travel photos. (Here are 25 easy poses for travel photos with examples!)
1. Hotel Room Balcony With A View Of Positano
You’re sipping a refreshing glass of sparkling lemon juice outside your charming Italian hotel room. You saver the morning by lounging in your complimentary hotel robe and staring out at the unmatchable Positano views that are slightly hazed by the morning mist.
Yeah, you’ll need a photo as a keepsake for this moment.
If you’re staying in Positano and are lucky enough to snag a hotel balcony room with a Positano view, remember to take a photo or two. This is one of the most iconic photos you can take on the Amalfi Coast, and the photo only requires you to take a few steps from your bed.
If you don’t feel as lucky, I encourage you to check out my guide on where to stay in Positano with a balcony on a budget. Otherwise, visit a restaurant or bar with a balcony view, such as Franco’s Bar or Ristorante Bruno, to take a Positano balcony picture.
2. View Of Positano From A Boat
Another famous Amalfi Coast photo you see all over Instagram is a shot of the Positano buildings from a boat.
Private boat rentals can be pricey (400+ euro per hour); however, there are various group boat tours available for a much more reasonable price (70-100 euro per person per day). I recommend boating with Blue Star, a local-family-run business, and taking a day excursion to either Amalfi Town or Capri. (Various Amalfi Town Instagram spots will be mentioned later in this post.)
Another more inexpensive option for a boat photo would be to take the ferry to either Amalfi Town or Capri. Although the photo will not come out quite the same as what you see on Instagram, due to the ferry’s shape and crowds, you will still be able to get a shot with the iconic Positano buildings.
3. Spiaggia Grande At Dusk (Amalfi Coast Instagram Spots)
Spiaggia Grande is the main beach in Positano, as well as the most-photographed spot on the entire Amalfi Coast. When you picture Positano or the Amalfi Coast, you’re likely picturing the view from Spiaggia Grande.
Dusk is one of the best time to take photos at Spiaggia Grande for a few of reasons.
- One, you normally have to pay to be on this part of the beach (there is a tiny public area, but the view is not as great). Taking your Instagram shots at dusk after the private beach clubs close will allow you to take your photos without paying for a chair and umbrella.
- Two, because the beach clubs are closed at dusk, there are little to no crowds. You’ll be able to take photos without strangers photobombing.
- And three, sunsets in Positano are simply magnificent. Pink, purple and pale yellow hues flood the sky as the sun sets past the mountain, and the city begins to light up magically as if it was Paris. Just note that, because of the mountain, the sun sets extremely early in Positano — even in the summer!
4. Spiaggia Grande After Dark
Similarly, while you’re on the Amalfi Coast, you’ll definitely need at least one Instagram photo from Spiaggia Grande at night. After dark, Positano’s main beach boasts thousands of city lights and silhouetted buildings. The beach is quiet and peaceful, and the horizon twinkles with boat lights reflecting off the water.
While you’re there, take a calming beach stroll and grab dinner at one of the many fabulous restaurants that line that beach. I personally recommend Covo dei Saraceni, but Chez Black and Buca di Bacco are also popular among visitors.
5. Across From Music On The Rocks (Amalfi Coast Instagram Spots)
At the far end of Spiaggia Grande, you’ll find the Music On The Rocks nightclub and beach club. Across the boardwalk from the club is a super famous photo spot seen all over Instagram.
This spot has one of the best views on the Amalfi Coast, filled with iconic turquoise umbrellas, orange beach chairs and the epic villas of Positano.
Please note that this spot is on private property (owned by a beach club). Even though the public photographs this spot daily, know that you cannot stay on this side of the beach without paying to rent a chair. The beach club employees don’t mind when you jump over the rope to snap a quick photo, but don’t stay long.
6. Via Marina Grande
Via Marina Grande is the pedestrian street located along the main beach in Positano (Spiaggia Grande). Although the street is usually crowded during the day with beach and restaurant goers, it remains a fantastic photo-opp with the iconic Positano view. Go right away in the morning to avoid the crowds.
7. Beach Changing Rooms
Between the restaurants of Via Marina Grande, you’ll find a sign for public bathrooms. When you enter the bathroom area, you’ll also be met with fun blue-and-white-striped changing rooms topped with green ivy.
8. With A Rental Vintage Car
Imagine this: it’s a comfortable sunny afternoon, partly cloudy and the sea is glittering. You’re sitting in the backseat of a red vintage Fiat with the ragtop down so the breeze can feather through your hair as you coast on the winding cliffside. Pedestrians “oo” and “ah” as you pass, and you can’t help but flash a Jay Gatsby smolder in return.
Sounds pretty on-par for an Positano Instagram spot, doesn’t it?
Hiring a vintage classic car for two hours to take photos will definitely make for envy-evoking Amalfi Coast Instagram photos. You can even hire a driver (our driver’s name was Paolo, naturally), so you don’t have to think twice about driving stick-shift through the hilly streets.
I suggest hiring through Positano Vintage Dream. It costs about 170 euro to cover the car rental, friendly driver and gas for two hours — very reasonable in my opinion. Highly recommend!
9. Viale Pasitea (Amalfi Coast Instagram Spots)
In addition, Viale Pasitea is the name of a street located up inside the beautiful Positano buildings. On this street, you will find adorable shops, luxe cafes and, of course, some of the most Instagrammable views of the city.
(By the way, if you choose to take a vintage car photo tour through Positano Vintage Dream, your driver will bring you to Viale Pasitea.)
10. The Positano Marina
The marina in Positano is located right next to the public section of Spiaggia Grande. This is where all of the ferries and tour boats dock.
Apart from the ship-shape marina views (pun intended), this Amalfi Coast Instagram spot boasts epic, hazy views of the layering cliffside. I suggest taking photos here right away in the morning if you like the sunny, hazy look.
11. With The Giant Marina Anchor
Similarly, on the marina near the helipad, you’ll find a giant, Instagram-worthy anchor leaning against the cliff.
12. Outside Hotel Casa Albertina
If you’re visiting Positano, Italy, it is likely that you either want to visit or already have visited the Greek islands too. You can get a taste for both places outside of Hotel Casa Albertina!
Tucked away in the brilliant pastel villas lies this small, undiscovered and blossom-filled nook of Positano. You will find this exact Amalfi Coast Instagram spot just above Viale Pasitea in front of the hotel.
Interested in staying at Hotel Casa Albertina? You can find a full review of the hotel here.
13. Outside Hotel Poseidon (Amalfi Coast Instagram Spots)
Moreover, just down the street from Hotel Casa Albertina, you will find the legendary Hotel Poseidon. Year after year, Hotel Poseidon remains one of the most iconic hotels along the entire Amalfi Coast.
Even if you don’t stay at Hotel Poseidon, the front of the hotel still counts as a remarkable photo-worthy spot. The hotel often has a vintage car parked outside the front, so if you are unable to book a vintage car photo tour, you can at least capture a free picture here.
14. Le Sirenuse Hotel Terrace
Similarly, Le Sirenuse is arguably the most iconic hotel on the Amalfi Coast — competing only with Hotel Poseidon.
The architecture of Le Sirenuse alone proves to be an incredible Instagram spot. But, if you’re lucky enough to stay at Le Sirenuse, be sure to grab a photo on the hotel terrace across from the lobby. Here, you’ll find one of the most beautiful views on the entire Amalfi Coast.
15. Le Sirenuse Hotel Pool (Amalfi Coast Instagram Spots)
Likewise, the hotel pool at Le Sirenuse is one of the most viral Instagram spots of Positano. The red hotel walls contrast with the long aqua pool, creating a very visually appealing view.
However, remember to only take photos here if you have pool access. Do not loiter or break in! An Instagram photo is not worth breaking the law.
16. Franco’s Bar
The last Le Sirenuse Instagram spot is Franco’s Bar. Unlike the hotel terrace and pool, you can take pictures at Franco’s Bar without actually staying at Le Sirenuse.
Franco’s Bar is the most envied seasonal luxury bar on the Amalfi Coast, as it has an immaculate sunset view of Positano. As you watch the sunset from arguably the most iconic viewpoint of the town, your taste buds will be praising the scrumptious drinks Franco’s has to offer. I personally recommend the non-alcoholic “Positano Tropicana.”
I suggest arriving to the bar front between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. (17:30-18:00) if you can, because the sun sets early on the Amalfi Coast, and there will be a line to enter. Also, I must warn you about the hefty prices here. There is a 20 euro per person spending minimum, and all of the cocktails (and mocktails) cost at least 20 euro each.
17. Salvatore’s Fruit Stand (Amalfi Coast Instagram Spots)
Fruit stands are also popular photo spots along the Amalfi Coast. But, instead of giving you a generic “fruit stand” response, I’m giving you the name of this exact fruit stand: Salvatore’s Fruit Stand.
For a fee, this fruit stand’s owner, Salvatore, will allow you to take photos in front of the stand. Not only will he allow you to take the photos, though, he will also pose you, hand you fruits to pose with, give you props and totally direct your photoshoot. You’ll find this stand on the drive between Positano and Praiano.
Salvatore’s fruit stand is a super fun Amalfi Coast Instagram spot. Unfortunately, this also means that Salvatore’s is popular and, thus, can be crowded and chaotic. While you’re here, beware of pickpockets. Keep track of your belongings and don’t let anyone (Salvatore included) “hold” them for you.
18. With Your Delicious Food
Positano is home to some of the best seafood and Italian restaurants. Don’t forget to take a cute Instagram photo while twirling your pasta or picking up your pizza!
19. Beach Club Across From Blu Bar
If you choose to splurge on beach club chairs while in Positano, which I personally recommend doing, be sure to take advantage of the beach food service served right to your chair from Blu Bar for lunch and/or an afternoon snack.
Remember, you’ll find the most Instagrammable view of Positano at Spiaggia Grande. Don’t forget to snap a couple photos while you lounge here.
20. Chez Black
Chez Black, a restaurant decked out in ship decor (pun intended, again), is a very touristy restaurant that you won’t want to miss photographing. While you’re here, eat a slice of their delicious pizza — some of the best pizza in Positano, in my opinion!
21. Ristorante Bruno
Located right up the street front Le Sirenuse and Franco’s Bar, Ristorante Bruno is a must-visit for dinner in Positano. Loved by the locals, Ristorante Bruno offers an amazing menu of pasta, steak, fresh seafood from the same morning’s catch, as well as an unforgettable terrace view of Positano.
FYI, Ristorante Bruno was so delicious that we went back twice during our stay. Our favorite dishes were the shrimp in lemon sauce, spaghetti with clams and mozzarella wrapped in meat.
22. Arienzo Beach Club (Amalfi Coast Instagram Spots)
If you’ve searched for pictures of Positano and/or the Amalfi Coast on Instagram, it is likely you have seen pictures of Arienzo Beach Club. Arienzo Beach Club has the iconic orange and white umbrellas and beach chairs.
What Instagram doesn’t show you, though, is the pretty penny you pay to spend a day at Arienzo. Because this club is nestled in the rocks of a private beach area, it is only accessible from Positano by boat. Sixty-five euro will get you the most inexpensive club day package. It includes a basic last-row beach chair rental, food, the boat taxi and more.
23. Amalfi Drive
Amalfi Drive is the main road that connects all of the towns together on the Amalfi coast. If you start driving down Amalfi Drive from Positano to Amalfi Town, you will find countless breathtaking views and photo-opps of Positano and the Mediterranean Sea.
Pro tip: The Positano Vintage Dream vintage car photo tour will take you down Amalfi Drive to take pictures, so you won’t have to worry about hopping on and off a bus or paying for an expensive taxi.
24. Streets Of Praiano
In addition to Amalfi Drive, Positano Vintage Dream will also take you into the town of Praiano. Unlike the colorful buildings of Positano, Praiano offers stacked stucco white buildings that resemble the Greek islands. The coastal streets of Praiano are the perfect location for an Amalfi Coast sunset.
25. Fiordo Di Furore (Amalfi Coast Instagram Spots)
Fiordo Di Furore (Furore Fjord) houses a giant arched bridge located at the bottom of Praiano. You can get the best Instagram photos here from the Fiordo Di Furore beach. Or, you can spot the arch from the ocean on a boat going from Positano to Amalfi Town.
26. Spiaggia Di Atrani
When in Amalfi (i.e. the city of Amalfi Town), be sure to have a mini photoshoot at Spiaggia Di Atrani, also known as Atrani Beach. Spiaggia Di Atrani is the main beach in Amalfi and offers both private and public areas. The cream and teal buildings make for an incredible picture backdrop.
27. Marina Coppola
Neighbors to Spiaggia Di Atrani is Marina Coppola, Amalfi’s main boat dock and marina. Once again, the buildings here (this time, pale yellow and rose), make for stunning Amalfi Coast Instagram photos.
28. Duomo Di Amalfi
If you walk about five minutes into Amalfi Town straight from the beach and Marina Coppola (down Via Duca Mansone I, to be exact), you will eventually run into Duomo Di Amalfi (Amalfi Cathedral). Feel free to stop here and take pictures outside from the piazza, inside the arches, and even from inside the arches looking outside.
The piazza gets extremely busy during the day, so mentally prepare for photo-bombers! Otherwise, go to the duomo early in the morning to avoid crowds.
29. Hidden Amalfi Town Streets & Passageways
Furthermore, as you continue exploring Amalfi Town, you will inevitably run into quaint hidden streets and passageways within the city.
Escape the tourist-ridden main streets and peek around these areas. Wandering through these passageways gives you a truthful look into the charming clothesline local culture of the Amalfi Coast.
30. With Lemon Sorbet Served Inside A Lemon (Amalfi Coast Instagram Spots)
Lastly, if you haven’t already noticed by the other photos, the lemons of Positano and the Amalfi Coast are legendary. The city’s warm coastal climate makes for perfect lemon groves and an endless array of lemon treats.
One such lemon treat that is popular among Amalfi Coast tourists is local lemon sorbet served inside a whole lemon. Although the price of the treat resembles the price of a treat at Disney World, this lemon sorbet will undoubtably bring you a youthful sense of joy.
And the fresh lemon flavor is absolutely delicious.
You can find the best lemon sorbet served in a whole lemon at Il Pianeta Del Gelato.
Where Not To Take Instagram Photos On The Amalfi Coast
Despite this exhaustive list of Amalfi Coast Instagram spots where you should go for photos, there is one popular Instagram spot where you should NOT take photos.
That is in front of the ceramic shops.
Every travel blogger and Instagrammer will tell you otherwise, but you need to understand that taking photos in front of the ceramic shops is actually prohibited.
Why?
Because the ceramic pieces are original works of art and, thus, subject to copyright. Taking — or worse, posting — photos of these ceramics encourages scammers to copy the ceramics cheaply and sell them for profit.
Resist the temptation. Be respectful to the ceramic shop owners. Don’t take photos in front of the ceramics.
